I finally made it to my first destination, Lasqueti Island, BC, but it was more of an adventure than I ever thought.
I arrived by bus, on a trip spanning three days and 5 provinces. It started off quite well with a dear friend dropping me off at the station, and great seatmate that traveled with me to Sudbury. I chose to sit beside her when I saw she was eating chocolate (there is a sensible woman!).
However in Sudbury things began to go down-hill. An hour bus cleaning turned into an 2 1/2 hr stop to change a flat tire. But I was philosophical about it, and took the time to stretch my legs, chat a little, and journal.
When we got back under way, all was well until past Thunder Bay, in Upsala ON. There the police were called! One passenger had threatened another, a mild-mannered man with a handlebar mustache. It worked out in the end, with the man who started it being kicked off to join the next bus, in 8 hrs.
After that drama, I breathed a sigh of relief temporarily in Winnipeg. We had a 3 hour layover, so I grabbed a quick dinner with a fellow passenger I’d chatted a bit with. It went very well, but I drank tea and he did tequila shots! After, another passenger invited us to the pub for a drink, and I was happy to go anywhere as long as I could wi-fi.
Back at the bus station though, Security was not impressed. My temporary companions didn’t make it through, especially because one of them, the one I ate dinner with, joked about having a gun. (Two more for the next bus in 8 hrs.)
On top of all of this, in Saskatoon, someone with mental health issues and a strong smell was kicked off. However in the process I did learn that “he” was a “she” (I really, really, couldn’t tell).
But, that was all easy compared to what happened in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan…
